A new photo from the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel reunites the Russo family and confirms the return of David DeLuise and Maria Canals Barrera as the Russo parents. The original Disney Channel show ran from 2007 to 2013 and follows the Russos, a family of wizards who must keep their magical powers secret as they try to blend into the mortal world. Now, nearly a decade after the hit show concluded, Disney has ordered a pilot for a sequel series starring David Henrie and guest-starring Selena Gomez.

DeLuise took to Instagram to share a photo of the Russo family reunited, confirming that the Russo parents are returning for the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel.

While Gomez and Henrie had already signed on to reprise their roles as Alex and Justin, respectively, the new photo confirms that DeLusie and Barrera will also appear as Jerry and Theresa, respectively. The only original Russo member missing from the photo is Jake T. Austin’s Max, who has not yet been confirmed to be returning.

What To Expect From the Wizards of Waverly Place Sequel

Rumors of a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel have been swirling for years. After all, it was one of the Disney Channel’s most popular and acclaimed series, winning two Emmy Awards during its run. Meanwhile, Disney has already been capitalizing on the nostalgia of revivals with shows like Raven’s Home and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. One of the major factors in making a long-awaited revival or sequel happen is the original cast’s willingness to return. Fortunately, Henrie and Gomez got on board, and now DeLuise and Barrera may inspire further reprisals.

Meanwhile, in his announcement, Henrie confirmed that the Russo family has grown since Wizards of Waverly Place. Mimi Gianopulos has joined the cast as Giada, Justin’s wife, while Alkaio Thiele has been cast as Justin’s son. Janice LeAnn Brown will also star in the series as Billie, a young wizard Justin takes under his wing. The two members of the cast fans of the original are anxiously awaiting news on are Austin and Jennifer Stone. Given that Stone has remained close to the series with her Wizards of Waverly Pod, it seems likely she’d return as fan-favorite Harper.

10 Wizards Of Waverly Place Characters That Must Return For The Reboot

In addition to Alex and Justin, these 10 key Wizards of Waverly Place characters need to come back for the sequel in order for it to be a success.

Although DeLuise and Barrera are returning to Wizards of Waverly Place, it’s unclear if they will be series regulars or guest stars like Gomez. It is likelier they may be supporting characters or guest stars, given that the show’s primary focus will be on Justin. According to the synopsis, Justin leaves his wizarding ways behind to become a family man until an incident at WizTech and Billie help him remember his roots.
