Ncuti Gatwa Reveals Advice Past Doctor Who Stars Gave Him Before Filming Season 14

Summary

  • Ncuti Gatwa received advice from previous Doctor Who stars to “enjoy it,” and he has taken it to heart.
  • The show’s next season should bring back the lighthearted joy that has defined Doctor Who for 60 years.
  • Gatwa’s previous work on Sex Education proves he is capable of playing an ostentatious and fun leading character like the Doctor.

Ncuti Gatwa shares the advice he was given by previous Doctor Who stars before taking on his role as the newest Time Lord. After making his first appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor in the 60th anniversary specials, Gatwa will continue his run as the Time Lord in Doctor Who season 14. The actor’s next appearance in the BBC series will be in the seasonal special “The Church on Ruby Road,” which airs on December 25.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Gatwa reveals the advice former Doctor Who stars gave him in order to take on the Time Lord. According to Gatwa, past cast members told him “to enjoy it,” something he has begun to take to heart. Check out the full quote from Gatwa below:

Certainly not with playing the role, but they told me to enjoy it. To enjoy it. This is the maddest time of my life. It’s going to be the maddest time of my life. It’s going to be the biggest rollercoaster of my life, but it’s going to be the best time as well. And so, throughout all the madness, all the chaos, and the peak in the interest in you and all that kind of stuff.? Just remember, at the core of it, it’s fun.

This is a very fun show, and it’s important to have fun with it. And I now learning to take that advice on board. Season 1 I couldn’t quite because I just felt I needed to get it right. I was like, “I have to get this right, and I have to be perfect!” But now those nerves are settled, and now I just enjoy it.

Doctor Who Season 14 Needs To Bring Back The Lighthearted Joy Of The Doctor

Gatwa’s statement on the importance of having “fun” with Doctor Who is promising for the show’s next season. While the show can succeed while delving into more dramatic or even horrific plots (such as in the stellar season 3 episode “Blink”), Doctor Who tends to shine when it maintains the whimsical spirit that has so defined it for its 60 years on air. This is something that previous lead David Tennant has been known to capture well, so hopefully Gatwa can emulate this spirit as he takes over for Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor.

The Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials straddle the line between the dramatic and the lighthearted. On the one hand, “The Giggle” features the Toymaker, one of the more maniacal and genuinely scary villains from the series. On the other, the first Doctor Who special, “The Star Beast,” features a more comic-book-like villain in Beep the Meep, and rekindles the joy of the TARDIS as Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor first races through the updated structure, mesmerized.

While additional Toymaker adventures are expected in Doctor Who season 14, the new episodes have the opportunity to reignite the jovial flame of previous Doctors. Gatwa may be the perfect actor to take on this “fun” role. His previous work playing Eric Effiong on the hit Netflix series Sex Education had him playing an ostentatious leading character, a quality that he could easily resume when playing the Doctor. As Gatwa takes on the Time Lord and catapults into the “maddest” period of his career, hopefully he can do so with a smile and a full sense of joy over playing the classic role.

Doctor Who

Originally premiered in 1963, Doctor Who is a sci-fi series that follows a powerful being known as a Time Lord, referred to as the Doctor. Using an interdimensional time-traveling ship known as the TARDIS, the Doctor travels time and space with various companions as they solve multiple problems and help avert catastrophe as much as they almost cause it. Though the Doctor is always the same character, they experience regenerations, allowing them to be recast every few seasons as a unique immortal being with new personality traits.
