Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 2 – Is It Happening? Everything We Know

Summary

  • Taylor Sheridan’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a successful Western series with the potential for a second season outside of the Yellowstone universe.
  • Lawmen: Bass Reeves straddles the line between history and fiction, delivering gripping Western action with Sheridan’s signature flourishes.
  • The TV premiere of Lawmen: Bass Reeves will likely impact its viewership and the possibility of a second season, though it is not yet confirmed.

Taylor Sheridan’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves is yet another smashing success, and the Western series has the potential for a second season. Released in 2023, Lawmen: Bass Reeves tells the story of the eponymous main character who was the first Black deputy U.S. Marshall who served west of the Mississippi River. Though it was originally envisioned as a spinoff of the Yellowstone universe, Lawmen was later confirmed to exist in its own timeline that is separate from Sheridan’s smash-hit franchise. Nevertheless, the series delivers all the gripping Western action that is expected from one of the producer’s other programs.

Premiering on November 5th, 2023 to a decent critical reception, Lawmen: Bass Reeves straddles the line between history and fiction as it brings the true story to life with Sheridan’s signature flourishes. The Yellowstone TV shows are notoriously hit or miss when it comes to critical reception, but Lawmen snapped that trend with a well-received change of pace. The biggest chance for Lawmen: Bass Reeves to blaze its own trail outside the Yellowstone universe is for it to find a second gear and deliver on its open-ended Lawmen title. As such, a second season could help it expand into a bona fide franchise all its own.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 2 Latest News

David Oyelowo Has An Idea For Season 2

Series star David Oyelowo gave his thoughts on Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2, and offered a compelling way that the show could continue. Oyelowo not only plays the titular historical lawman, but he also serves as executive producer on the Taylor Sheridan series. Speaking in that capacity, Oyelowo hinted that the Lawmen banner could be picked up with shows about other historical peace-keepers. Oyelowo said, “The idea, going forward, is to have other lawmen in history whose story should be told“.

This seems to suggest that Bass Reeves’ tale might be over, but enthusiasm still rides high for the franchise. Oyelowo went on to say “I’m a producer on those going forward; so, the idea is to keep the good work going“. That excitement for the future isn’t a guarantee that the franchise will grow, but it is a good sign that something new is coming soon.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 2 Is Not Confirmed

No Word Yet On The Future Of Lawmen: Bass Reeves

Because the show only recently dropped its first two episodes, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is not confirmed by Paramount+ or anyone involved with the show. However, the overwhelming popularity of Taylor Sheridan’s shows might spur Paramount+ to give Lawmen: Bass Reeves a second season. Though 1883 only lasted for one season, 1923 came as the second spinoff to the original Yellowstone series and was confirmed for two seasons. Lawmen: Bass Reeves might not be one of Sheridan’s Yellowstone shows, but it promises to be just as popular.

As far as anyone knows, Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2 is not in production at this time, though things could be happening behind the scenes. Shows like 1923 have been affected by the recently resolved WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes, though there has been no indication that Lawmen was impacted. Chances are, Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2 will come sometime in 2025.

Lawmen Might Continue As An Anthology

Series star and executive producer David Oyelowo hinted that Lawmen: Bass Reeves might be the beginning of a franchise of series based on other historical law enforcement figures. With that in mind, the series could continue as Lawmen and highlight the likes of Wyatt Earp or Pat Garrett, or delve even deeper into Old West history with more unsung figures. Bass Reeves was something of an obscure figure, and Oyelowo’s recent comments suggest that Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2 could be about someone else entirely.
