Is Wicked Based On The Movie, The Musical, Or The Book?

  • The Wicked movie is a film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which is loosely based on a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.
  • Maguire’s book is inspired by L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel The Wonderful of Oz, which was adapted into The Wizard of Oz movie.
  • The Wicked movie has already made a significant change from the stage musical by giving Dorothy a bigger presence, as her character is never properly shown on stage in the Broadway production.

Between the various adaptations and iterations of the story and characters, there could be some confusion about whether the Wicked movie is based on the stage musical, the original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book, or The Wizard of Oz movie. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the leading roles. The Wicked cast also features Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, and Michelle Yeoh, and more.

The Wicked movie has been in the works for quite some time. Filming began back in December 2022 but was halted due to the Hollywood strikes. Production resumed once the strikes were resolved, and now that filming has wrapped, the first Wicked trailer has finally arrived. The Wicked movie is set to release in two parts: with Wicked: Part One releasing on November 27, 2024, and Wicked: Part Two releasing on November 26, 2025. The excitement for Wicked is palpable, but for some, it may still be unclear what the 2024 Wicked movie is based on, exactly.

Director Jon M. Chu previously directed films like the movie musical
In the Heights
and the romantic comedy
Crazy Rich Asians.

Wicked Is An Adaptation Of The Broadway Musical Based On Gregory Maguire’s Book

Maguire’s book was in turn inspired by the same children’s novel that was adapted into The Wizard of Oz

The Wicked movie is a film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, which first premiered on Broadway in 2003. Loosely based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, the Wicked stage musical was written by Winnie Holzman with original music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, both of whom penned the screenplay for the Wicked movie, as well. Maguire’s book itself was inspired by Frank L. Baum’s children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was adapted into the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz.

Though its narrative eventually overlaps with Dorothy’s arrival in the Land of Oz in Act II, Wicked begins prior to the events of The Wizard of Oz. The musical tells the origin story of Galinda Upland (Grande), later known as Glinda the Good, and Elphaba Thropp (Erivo), later known as the Wicked Witch of the West, two polar opposite witches who form an unlikely friendship. The story is told from both of their perspectives and chronicles their days at Shiz University up until Elphaba’s eventual downfall.

Dorothy will appear in the Wicked movie with a much bigger presence.

Though it appears to be honoring the source material, the Wicked movie has changed one key part of the musical already. The trailer confirms that Dorothy will appear in the Wicked movie with a much bigger presence. Though she plays a crucial role in the Broadway show, Dorothy is never properly shown on stage. Her silhouette is visible in the scene where Elphaba is “melting,” but the audience never sees her in the flesh. While the trailer doesn’t show her face either, the Wicked movie’s big Dorothy change is still a major departure from the theatrical production.
