How To Solve The Legend of Ansur Book Puzzle In Baldur’s Gate 3

Solving the Legend of Ansur book’s puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be quite complicated, especially if you do not know where to look or are having a hard time connecting the dots left by the clues in the manuscript. Like most parts of the game, the Legend of Ansur book does not explicitly tell you where to go and what to do but leaves behind some hints that can eventually grant you special items. By following this optional side-quest, you can grab the Legendary Helm of Balduran, considered one of the best helmets in Baldur’s Gate 3.

This questline also rewards you with Balduran’s Giantslayer, a Legendary greatsword and one of the best weapons in the game, depending on your characters’ classes and if they are proficient with that specific weapon type. Even if the loot itself is not attractive, the storyline and the boss battle at the end are enough to justify going through the trouble of deciphering the riddles in the Legend of Ansur book in Baldur’s Gate 3 and finding a secret place called the Wyrmway, which is the lair of an ancient and menacing undead dragon.

How To Get The Legend Of Ansur Book In Baldur’s Gate 3

Save Duke Ravengard

The Legend of Ansur book’s acquisition is locked behind Wyll’s companion questline in Act 3. As such, you will have to progress through the main campaign, keeping the Blade of Frontiers alive throughout the story. This requires you to save Mizora during the final stages of Act 2. Once you arrive in Act 3, your next goal in the mission will be to save Duke Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mizora will make a proposal, but what you decide is irrelevant. Ultimately, you will need to proceed to the Iron Throne’s prison and save the sequestered Duke.

Once you save Duke Ravengard and interact with him, he will talk about Ansur, the dragon, and give you the Legend of Ansur, a tome that is automatically added to your inventory. Upon reading it, you will be provided with the original text and a portion of the Duke’s annotations. What you need to know is that the Wyrmway is near Wyrm’s Rock Prison and that you will need lightning powers to gain access to it. You should also steel yourself for a series of trials and a battle with Ansur in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Go To Wyrm’s Rock Prison

After reading the tome, you should proceed to Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and then, inside, move to Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Before entering, you will find the guard – there are many ways of getting through, from persuasion tactics to pickpocketing and even combat. Note that the NPCs you encounter here, such as the nearby Steel Watch automaton, may be hostile if you have previously disabled the Steel Watch in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once you can get past the guard and enter the prison, you will need to make a left turn.

You can access the Wyrmway without obtaining the Legend of Ansur book. It is recommended, however, that you save Duke Ravengard to progress through Wyll’s questline.

This will take you to a wall that seems like the end of a path. However, this is where the Legend of Ansur and Ravengard’s notes come into action. On the walls of this dead end are two torch-like figures shaped like dragons. As was mentioned by the Duke, the solution to this puzzle is using lightning spells on these torches. By doing so, they will light up with blue flames. You may have to act quickly to have them lit simultaneously. After both torches have been lit, you will gain access to the Wyrmway in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Beat The Trials To Face Ansur

Inside the Wyrmway, you will find four chambers: Chamber of Insight, Chamber of Strategy, Chamber of Courage, and Chamber of Justice. These serve as trials in the form of puzzles. Inside the Chamber of Insight, there are three distinct ghost-like NPCs, but only one should be eliminated, as they are a threat to the city. The nearby library should provide you with the answers you need, in case you can stop the flying books and read them. Once you figure out who the traitor is, you should attack only them, and the puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3 will be solved.

The ghost you should attack in the Chamber of Insight is Suleto.

Within the Chamber of Strategy, you will be required to defeat the Black King with only two moves on a giant chess board. The best way of doing this is by only moving the White Queen toward your target and forcing them to flee until you have them in checkmate. Alternatively, you can attack the Black King with lightning spells to destroy it. The Chamber of Courage’s trial is simple: you should survive four full turns of combat in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once the four rounds are over, the enemies will disappear.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus In BG3 Or Side With The Emperor?

One of the many choices faced in Baldur’s Gate 3 involves freeing Orpheus or siding with the Emperor in Act 3, and then living with the consequences.

The Chamber of Justice is the last key in the puzzles related to the Legend of Ansur book. To solve it, you will need to decipher a riddle hidden with paintings that are affected by Shrouded, an effect caused by a curse. The painting you want is called The Cell. Once Shrouded is removed, you should add it to your inventory and then put it on the empty pedestal on the opposite side from where you obtained it. After completing the puzzles in all four Chambers, you will gain access to the fight against Ansur in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Cell is the painting closest to the Balduran statue. You can eliminate the Shrouded effect on the paintings by casting the Remove Curse spell on it.

The final step in the Legend of Ansur book’s questline is to enter the newly opened chamber and face Ansur. This undead dragon has a lot of HP, is immune to Poison and Lightning damage, and is resistant to Necrotic damage. Ansur can also deal devastating attacks, one of which is powerful enough to wipe out the party. Once you defeat Ansur, you will be able to better understand the story of Balduran, and claim this hero’s Legendary greatsword and his helm, located in an altar at the far end of the chamber in Baldur’s Gate 3.
