An MCU Show Shot In 2022 May Take 3 Years To Release On Disney+

  • The Marvel TV series Ironheart, which finished filming in 2022, may not be released on Disney+ until 2025, three years after filming wrapped.
  • Delays in releasing Ironheart could be due to factors such as the slowdown of Disney+ releases, the need for extensive VFX work, and potential behind-the-scenes discussions.
  • The exact reasons for the Ironheart delays are unclear but may become clearer in the coming year.

The forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series Ironheart may have filmed in 2022, but it could take up to three years to release on Disney+. Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, debuted in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a prodigy who not only builds a device that detects vibranium but constructs an armored suit similar to those of Tony Stark. By the end of the movie, Williams constructs a new and far more advanced suit, allowing her to aid Wakanda in their battle with Namor’s forces. Although Williams returned her new suit of armor following Wakanda’s victory, she is expected to build a third suit and become Ironheart again in the Disney+ series Ironheart.

Ironheart began filming in Summer 2022 and finished by November, with the series initially scheduled for a late 2023 release. In early 2023, however, Disney reportedly decided to slow their output of content, making the show’s initial planned release unlikely. Indeed, by Summer 2023, reports stated that Ironheart would be delayed until sometime in 2024. Now, a new update from Disney+ touting their 2024 Marvel Studios releases leaves off Ironheart, indicating it may not premiere on the streaming service until some time in 2025, three years after it wrapped filming.

Why Is It Taking So Long For Ironheart To Release?

The exact reason for Ironheart‘s delays has not been offered by Disney or Marvel Studios, but there are a few of factors that may have contributed. First, Ironheart was always intended to debut after Secret Invasion, Loki season 2, and Echo, so the slowdown of Disney+ releases naturally pushed it back. There may also be other reasons that have not been made public, such as VFX work on the show. That said, there may be a larger factor at play other than Disney and Marvel slowing down the pace of their TV series releases.

Recent MCU movies and TV shows have had notably worse receptions among critics and viewers than the franchise is perhaps used to. With this in mind, Marvel Studios might lack confidence in Ironheart, especially after the disappointing reception of Secret Invasion. There haven’t been any reports indicating behind-the-scenes troubles on Ironheart akin to the Blade movie or Daredevil: Born Again, both of which received creative shakeups in the last two years. However, Ironheart was created prior to Marvel Studios resetting its TV production process and may suffer from problems that arose in some MCU Phase 4 and 5 series. It’s uncertain why Ironheart is taking so long to release, but it may become clear in the coming year.

When Will Ironheart Release On Disney+?

With Marvel Studios slowing their flow of releases and the Riri Williams series not appearing on the early Disney+ slate for next year, Ironheart could debut in late 2024 at the earliest, but it will likely be released sometime in late 2025. According to a United States Copyright Office filing, the first episode may come to Disney+ in early September 2025. While an exact release date is not yet known, Ironheart appears to be set to debut three years after it concluded filming.
